If you live in San Diego, you can almost forget that the island is there.
Coronado Island is accessed from the 5 freeway, south of downtown.
It is now free to cross the bridge. Over there you'll find good restaurants, golfing, shopping and hotels. There is a good little brewery over there (The Coronado Brewing Company) and a few other places to grab a beer.
The beach is wide, long and clean.

THE HOTEL DEL CORONADO (Coronado Island)
Everyone loves the Hotel Del Coronado. It's gorgeous, the history is tremendous. "Some like it hot" was filmed there with Marlyn Monroe and Tony Curtis. Also L. Frank Baum, wrote much of the "Wizard Of Oz" while at the hotel, he even based the Emerald City on the hotels architecture.
They say that in the back of the hotel there were little yellow bricks that went around the enormous area behind the hotel and trailed off toward the beach. And it is said, that is where he got the idea to....follow the yellow brick road. The yellow bricks are gone, but the hotel isn't going anywhere, it was declared a historic landmark in 1977. It was built in 1888 is situated right on the beautiful Coronado Beach on Coronado Island. The Del was chosen by USA TODAY as one of the top ten resorts in the world.

Coronado has, THE HOTEL DEL CORONADO, a legendary hotel.
