SAN DIEGO FANATIC
The best thing about Ocean Beach, (OB) is, the beach.
Also, it is one of those communities that, you really don't have to
leave the beach area for anything. (you can get your hair cut here,
grocery stores are here, there are coffee shops, bars, liquor stores,
great places to eat) So, you can stay off of the freeways and just relax
in OB. Which is what everyone does.
Why get stuck on the freeway, when you don't have to? There is an ownership feeling here. You'll hear time after time, "I've lived in OB, I've been
here 20 years, you're new, we do things different here". It's crazy frustrating and I would have to say really unfriendly. Put your ipod ear phones in your ear and enjoy the beach, the cliffs and avoid the local goofs. The
area is great, the beach is great, the rocks south of the pier, amazing.
It is an area you look into and see if it is right for you, if you're
looking for a place to live. It is also great to visit, eat, or have a
beer, there is also a fantastic dog beach here and SUNSET CLIFFS, is not
far away. Though, OB, is a "different" place, with some VERY strange
characters. The views of the ocean from the hills from above certainly
helps you deal with the strange people you may meet on the sidewalk.
Safety? I would not hang around on the boardwalk after midnight, especially if
you're a visitor. Just a word of caution. You'll most likely be fine,
but then again, there are people who are looking for someone to take
advantage of, during the day, you're fine. I always kept my ipod in my
ears as I walk to a store, or cafe. (just to keep the insanity out)
There is a feeling as if it is Haight street and it is 1968. So, expect
tie died shirts, and a hippy look and feel about this community. To find out
about restaurants in OB, click here. (RESTAURANTS)
To get here, take the 5 freeway to the Seaworld exit and follow the
signs where it says Sunset Cliff Boulevard. On Sunset Cliffs you'll take
a right on Newport Avenue which is the main drag in OB. You can park on
the street, or there is parking near the beach.
There is a path, (above) just south of the OB Pier which goes for a few blocks along the ocean. Check it out during the day, at night it gets a little sketchy.
And, just south of Ocean Beach, on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, is, SUNSET CLIFFS.
A great place, obviously to watch the sun set, and there is hiking at the cliffs.
Another word of caution if I may, there is always someone every year or so who get's too close and falls down the cliffs to the rocks. Even people who have lived here twenty years.
So, as the signs say, these are sheer unstable cliffs, stay back. Stay on the trail and enjoy the cliffs!
