SAN DIEGO FANATIC
It was a cold day in Washington when the Telecommunications Act of 1996 was written into law. The biggerst overhauling of the law in 60 years. It is this act that made consolidation possible and drove out all the mom and pop stations through out the nation. It gave major companies the right to buy many more stations in a market than they were previously allowed. The amount of people who were forced out of their jobs has got to be staggering.
The companies, traded on the stock exchange were only concerned with giving their stock holders quarterly earnings. The creative ability of radio personalities to be creative abruptly ended, as voicetracking took over the shows, the live part, of live radio...just ended and generally speaking is no more.
What happened in
San Diego, happened across the nation. The big corporations came in,
fired most of the personalities, put in a computer, and the show is
tracked (recorded). No one is there, it's a soul less vacuous place.
BUT, the stations still exist, help yourself, some shows in the morning
are actually still live some of the time.
